20 Netflix Movies and TV Shows to Watch at Home During Quarantine

Another week of quarantine in the books. I’m not sure about you, but I’m still having a difficult time embracing our current state of reality and stay at home order. The coronavirus is a part of everyone’s lives now, unfortunately, and everyone is figuring out how to get through this pandemic. With that being said, I’m going to shift my blog posts a bit to focus more on content relating to stay at home activities, routines, and outfits.
I’m naturally an introvert, but now that we’re all forced to stay at home, I find myself wanting to go out more than usual. The only thing that makes this time better for me is keeping myself occupied. I work on my blog or YouTube channel most days, but when I’m not doing those things, I love to relax and kick back with a Netflix show or movie.

Personally, I don’t believe that we’re obligated to be productive 24/7. This is an uncertain time, and you need to do whatever makes you feel better to stay sane such as watching Netflix. Yes, this is the most free time you’ll probably ever have, but that doesn’t mean you have to work all day every day. Please, please, please take some time every day to give yourself a break and relax. I know that I instantly feel better when all my pressures are alleviated. Sometimes watching tv and focusing my mind on someone else’s reality is easier than accepting my own. Here are the top 20 Netflix movies and shows to watch at home during the quarantine.

TV Shows

1. Gossip Girl

If you’ve followed me for a while, then you know that Gossip Girl is my Netflix obsession. I’ve watched this show at least six times and it never gets old. The show is set in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, NYC, and it follows elite families and their adventures in romance, drama, scandal, and extreme wealth. You’ll watch as Serena van der Woodsen, Nate Archibald, Chuck Bass, Blair Waldorf, and Dan Humphrey transform from privileged prep schoolers to the most powerful people in the Big Apple.

2. The Vampire Diaries

I’m not one for blood, but The Vampire Diaries instantly captured my attention once I started watching the show on Netflix and all was forgotten. The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural drama series based in Mystic Falls, Virginia, and it’s centered on the life of Elena Gilbert. She tries to manage her high school life while dealing with the loss of her parents and her love triangle between brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore. Oh, and did I mention that Stefan and Damon are vampires?

3. Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls is one of those cutesy, feel-good tv shows on Netflix you can’t get enough of. I grew up watching this show but didn’t watch it all the way through until my freshman year of college, and I loved it ever since. I feel like I can relate a lot to Rory, maybe because we’re both writers from Connecticut. Gilmore Girls is set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, CT, and it follows the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, an inseparable mother-daughter duo. Lorelai comes from wealth, but because she had Rory when she was only 16, her relationship with her parents has always been rocky, and the show focuses as much on family drama as it does on the close-knit relationships of a small town, Rory’s academic success, her romantic interests, and her quest to find her way in this world.

4. You

You is a Netflix original, and it only has two seasons, but trust me when I tell you that this is the craziest show you will ever watch. Joe Goldberg is a Brooklyn, NYC-based bookkeeper who forms an obsession with a girl named Guinevere Beck. He stalks her until he eventually has his chance to introduce himself and pretend to be a good boyfriend until he kills her once she learns too much about his past. His story repeats itself in Los Angeles during the second season after he changes his name to Will and finds a new victim named Love. But Love is far from innocent herself.

5. Victorious

Victorious is easily one of the funniest shows I watched during my childhood. It has a star-packed cast, and you can watch as the main character Tori Vega, portrayed by Victoria Justice, transforms into a true talent at Hollywood Arts High School in Los Angeles. A kid-friendly comedy that follows Tori and her friends as they experience high school, love, drama while training to become the next big thing in Hollywood.

6. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

This is another Netflix original that’s worth watching, but a bit more supernatural and less comedy than the sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch from back in the day. A supernatural drama set in Greendale, New York (located nearby Riverdale!) The Chilling Adventures follows Sabrina Spellman and her two aunts, Hilda, and Zelda and their double lives as witches and everyday townspeople. Watch as Sabrina battles everything from high school romance to witch powers and even the devil himself—who just so happens to be her father!

7. Next in Fashion

I haven’t watched much of this show yet, but it caught me at fashion. This is a reality tv show where designers battle against one another and to become next big name to take on the fashion world. There is a cash prize of course, and things get a little messy and stressful throughout the competitions.

8. The Fosters

The Fosters is a drama sitcom covering a middle-class family living in the Bay Area in California. They are far from your average family, and they celebrate the qualities that make them different from the cookie-cutter white, wealthy families portrayed in most tv shows and movies. Steph and Lena Foster are a couple, and together they have five children: Brandon, Calli, Jude, Jesus, and Mariana. Four children are adopted, and Brandon is Steph’s son from a previous marriage. The show addresses topics that society typically finds uncomfortable to talk about such as gender identity, sex, racism, and how all of this fits into the average teenage experience in high school and family life. Each character has a different story during the show, but the seven family members come together during times of loss, grief, celebration, and excitement.

9. Glee

Glee is a musical drama sitcom set in Ohio that covers the lives of teens in glee club. It’s the stereotypical high school landscape where the jocks and cheerleaders run the school, and the popular kids make fun of art and music. However, beloved teacher Mr. Schuester can bring the club back to its glory with a little help from straight-A student Rachel Berry and an unlikely ally in a football player named Finn Hudson.

Movies

1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I love everything about this movie. It covers every possible scenario teens go through from their first time drinking alcohol to falling in love with someone way out of their league. The main character is Charlie Kelmeckis and he’s an awkward freshman who is very quiet and usually keeps to himself. Then he befriends two seniors named Sam and Patrick who take him on a wild adventure from high school parties to late-night drives on the rooftop of a car. Charlie discovers who he is and what he’s passionate about during this year and finally allows him to feel again after bearing the guilt of his aunt’s death even though it wasn’t his fault.

2. A Cinderella Story

This is the OG Cinderella story. Well, except for the cartoon version, of course. The plot is similar, except it’s set in California and takes place in a high school setting. Sam is the main character, and she’s stuck cooking and cleaning at her dad’s diner after he dies and leaves everything to her evil stepmother. Sam is trying her best to help out at her father’s diner to keep his legacy alive while surviving high school with her awful stepsisters always there to ruin her days. Then there are mysterious instant messages from a crush…

3.Sex and the City

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Anything that has to do with fashion and NYC is for me! Sex and the City, a drama/romance show that follows Carrie Bradshaw, a columnist who lives in Manhattan and writes about sex. Her four best friends Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte play a big role in Carrie’s life, and the movie documents their ups and downs with relationships, careers, fashion, and more.

4. Dear John

Now I’m not one for sappy Nicholas Sparks movies, but I appreciate Dear John because the plot is slightly realistic. Not everything works out in some relationships, no matter how much we want them to, and that’s evident from John and Savannah’s relationship in the movie. John and Savannah meet in Charleston, South Carolina, while John is on a break from his deployment in the army. The two fall in love quickly and remain in touch throughout John’s commitments to the army, with a few meetups in between. Viewers think the pair will end up together until the plot reveals that Savannah has chosen to end their relationship and marry her neighbor Allan to help take care of his autistic son after he is diagnosed with cancer.

5.Tall Girl

Tall Girl is one of the best Netflix originals. Jodi, a 6’1 teenager, has always been the tallest girl in her class and is often bullied by her classmates. Jodi is insecure and chooses to hide from the world. Then she falls for a new student at her school and is willing to do anything to date him until she realizes he has been playing her the whole time. Jodi eventually sees her self-worth and finds love with her best friend.

6. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

One of my favorite book series takes movie form! I think Netflix did a great job with the movie adaptation, and it’s every bit as cute as the book. The plot follows Lara-Jean Covey, a teenager who has never had a boyfriend before. She has a crush on her sister’s boyfriend Josh and never intends to tell him. However, love letters she writes to him are mailed out by her younger sister. One of the letters is given to football player Peter Kavinsky, and they begin a fake relationship.

7. Dumplin’

I have a thing for Netflix originals, but this movie is nothing shy of wholesome. It’s another story of classic southern pageant culture and defying gender stereotypes of what the ideal woman should look like. Willowdean is a teen from Texas, and her mother was a pageant queen during her youth. Willowdean feels like a disappointment to her because she is plus-size and doesn’t fit into the world her mother worships. Willow decides to take a chance and enter the pageant to prove there’s more than one version of beauty.

8. The Kissing Booth

Kissing Booth is a must-see! It’s so a romantic comedy that is so funny and relatable you’ll fall out of your seat laughing. Elle, a teen l in California, plays soccer and spends her time hanging out with her bestie Lee. Then, her school has a carnival, and Elle sets up a kissing booth with Lee as a fundraiser. She ends up kissing Lee’s rebellious older brother, and the two unexpectedly fall in love.

9. After

After is another cringy movie I wouldn’t expect myself to like, but I did. I read the book series a few years ago, and I had to give the movie a chance. After follows Tessa Young, an innocent freshman at Washington State University and her tumultuous relationship with bad boy Hardin Scott. Tessa’s roommate, Steph, forces Tessa to go to a frat party with her where she meets Hardin. Hardin and Tessa eventually spark a relationship, but he’s afraid to show his feelings for her at first. It’s later revealed that Hardin and Tessa’s relationship was based on a bet.

10. He’s Just Not That Into You

I watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago, and it’s hilarious! I think we can all relate to having that one guy that’s just not that into us. The plot centers on the stories of four different characters and their quests to find a relationship.

Thanks so much for reading! Stay safe xx
